One of the great things about staying on Oxford Street in London is getting to walk past the Selfridges windows everyday – they’re always amazing and unlike anything Sydneysiders like myself get to see regularly. Right now It’s Nice That, a design publication and blog out of the UK, have taken over the windows of Selfridges for Bright Young Things which showcases the work of emerging british designers. Of all of the amazing designers on display my personal standout had to be Oliver Ruuger.
Oliver, based out of London, started designing luxury accessories after graduating in 2008 from Kingston University in menswear. After winning the ‘MA Award in Design’ from the MA Fashion Artfact Course at London College of fashion, he went on to showcase his work at London Fashion Week in September Last Year. What I find really interesting is that Oliver’s thesis was on non-traditional methods of inspiration and he explains over at Adorn Girl that it pretty much means he eschews visual inspiration entirely and you can see that from the originality of his work.
And all that aside – he creates crazy, original and beautiful accessories. Think umbrella’s with curved handles ending in horse hair, studded briefcases and rubber spiked saddles. I’ll leave you with some images below.
